“Dighi” is a bangla term that refers to a pond. Maharajar Dighi is a historic pond where a king took his life. It is located in Amarkhana union of Panchagarh district headquarters. This pond is nearly 1500-year-old spreading over an area about 54 acres.
Why this pond is famous:
During the Bengali New Year/Pohela Baishakh a huge fair is organized on the banks this pond. People from India also comes to visit this fair.
Some says, locals used to ask the pond for dishes a day before their wedding ceremony. And invisibly, dishes would be brought. The dishes needed to be cleaned once after it is used and returned to the pond. Locals also vowed on the bank of this miraculous pond regarding family or marital problems.
Historical Background:
According to history, there was a king named Prithu/Prithvi. He was the king of Bhetargarh, presently part of Jalpaiguri, India. During his reign the king built a palace and a temple. He also excavated a pond, which is known as Maharaja’s Pond.
King Prithu's reign came to an end when unscrupulous and low-caste people named Kichak attacked his fort. To protect his sanctity and dignity, he had no other way but to commit suicide in that pond along with his family. His guards also followed him.
How to get there
From Dhaka's Shyamoli, Gabtoli bus terminals and Mirpur, you can go to Panchagarh through Nabil Paribahan, Hanif Enterprise, Tanjila Travel, Barkat Travel.
If you want to go by train, you can reach Panchagarh by Panchagarh Express, Ekta and Hridoy Express trains from Kamalapur in Dhaka.
From Panchagarh, take a bus to reach Tetulia/Banglabandha and get off at Board Bazar in a rickshaw or battery-powered auto. Alternatively, you can hire a private car/micro for the whole day from Panchagarh.
