Dhanmondi Lake, located inside the hustle and bustle of the capital Dhaka, is a popular recreational area with a handful of nature. It is mainly sited in the residential area of Dhanmondi. The Lake was formerly a dead channel of the Karwan Bazar River and was also connected to the Turag River. The Lake is in some measure connected with the Begunbari Canal too. In 1956, when Dhanmondi was developed as a residential area, about 16% of the total expanse of Dhanmondi was designated for the lake. The lake offers striking panoramic views to many thousands of people who live in the purlieu.

Starting from Jigatola, the lake ranges to Road 27 and is hemmed in by the Mohammadpur-Lalmatia area in the northern, Satmasjid Road in the west, Bangladesh Gate in the south, and by Kalabagan residential area in the east. The Lake measures 3 km in length, 35-100m in width, with a maximum depth of 4.77m. It covers a total area of 37.37 hectors. There is a conduit in the lake near the Sukrabad area, which is the only channel of the Lake. Excess floodwater due to heavy precipitation of rainwater passes through this channel so as the water level in the Lake remains more or less the same irrespective of seasonal changes.

The lake is under the supervision of several authorities considering its various aspects. The Ministry of Works has its ownership, the Fisheries Department is responsible for the fishery development, the Dhaka city corporation, being the principal municipal body, exercises some obligation in its development. The Department of Environment looks after the aspects of a proper, decent, clean, and safe environment and safeguard of aquatic resources of the lake. In and around Dhanmondi Lake, some restoration works were carried out from 1998 to 2001 with a vision to make the Dhanmondi Lake a pollution-free recreation zone.

Various cultural events, concerts for various events, or festivals are held at the Rabindra Sarobar. Moreover, near Dhanmondi Lake is the residence of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Different parts of the lake bear different names as per their scope, social and political reasons. Medinova Square, Zia Square, Jahajbari Point, Shooting Point, Island Square, Bachelor Point, Lekpar Round Square, Bangabandhu Square, Sheikh Russell Square, Battala, etc are some of the locations’ names surrounding the Lake in the Lake area.

The Lake is a perfect place to spend time with dear ones. The Lake area is safe, clean, and organized for a perfect picnic or just spending some quality time. Various types of delicious street foods are also available. A restaurant is also set up within the compound serving delicacies. The entrance to the Dhanmondi Lake is absolutely free of cost. However, visitors can stay at this lake from 5 am to 10 pm.
