Kantajir Temple, Dinajpur.

Kantajir Hindu Temple is locally known as Kantajew/Kantaji temple. It is one of the most beautiful mediaval temple in Bangladesh, which was established in 1800s by Raja Prannath. It is one of the historical masterpieces and finest surviving terracotta temples. However, some also calls it as Navaratna temple. This temple is situated 1 mile West from the Dinajpur-Tetulia road, inside Kantanagar village.

Structure of the temple:

In 1752, when the establishment of this temple was finished by Raja Ramnath (adopted son of Prannath), the temple was 70 feet high. Due to the earthquake in 1897 it had lost some it’s spires.

It was built in the Bengal terracotta temple architecture style (Nava-ratna style). The temple stands on a raised platform with stairs leading to the entrance. The main shrine houses the deity (originally dedicated to Lord Krishna).

The entire outer surface is covered with exquisite terracotta plaques depicting: scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, Krishna Leela (divine plays of Lord Krishna), social and cultural life of the 18th century, floral and geometric patterns etc.

The remaining structure now appears as a Pancha-ratna (five-towered) temple. Currently, it measures approximately 52 feet in height. The walls are about 3 feet thick, providing strong support.
