Sura Mosque, Dinajpur

Sura mosque is located in Ghoraghat Upazila, Dinajpur District of Bangladesh. It stands in the Chowgacha (Chourgacha) village, about 3–6 km west of Ghoraghat town along the Hili–Ghoraghat paved road.

There are many saying regarding its establishment. Some say this mosque was crafted by Jinns. The name “Sura”-refers to supernatural or hidden entity according to folklore. One of the most enduring legends, thus, emphasizes the belief that this mosque was almost built magically. Some connect it with Shah Shuja, a Mughal governor.

However, this mosque is almost 500 years old. The Sura Mosque is primarily divided into two sections: the main prayer hall and the verandah. The prayer hall measures 7.84 meters by 7.84 meters, while the verandah is 4.48 meters long and 2.12 meters wide. The mosque is constructed with small-sized bricks using lime and surki (brick dust mortar), and the walls are 1.80 meters thick.

The roof of the main prayer hall is covered with a hemispherical dome. The verandah features three similar domes arranged in a row. There are four stone minarets at the corners of the prayer hall and two at the verandah, making a total of six minarets.

The mosque has three arched entrances on the eastern side and one each on the north and south sides. Additionally, there is one entrance on each side of the verandah. Inside, on the qibla wall, there are three beautifully decorated concave mihrabs, intricately carved from stone.
