
Across Bangladesh, there are numerous fascinating spots where a unique tree or garden has become an integral part of the region's identity. The famous Suryapuri mango tree in Thakurgaon's Baliadanga is one such place which has become a major tourist attraction. This huge tree is about 200 years old and is situated in North Bengal’s Thakurgaon. The exact location: Mondu Mala village on Harin Mari border of Baliadangi upazila of Thakurgaon district.
This ancient mango tree is spread over an area of about 2.5 bighain the border area of India. It is considered to be the largest mango tree in the Asian continent.
The Baliadangi Suryapuri mango tree stands at an impressive height of 80-90 feet, with a girth measuring around 35 feet. It boasts 19 thick branches that spread from three sides of the tree, each appearing like an individual mango tree from a distance. While the exact planting date of this renowned mango tree remains unknown, it is widely believed to be over 200 years old. Each day, numerous visitors come to admire its grandeur.
The current owners of the Baliadangi Suryapuri mango tree are Noor Islam and Saidur Islam. The tree was originally planted by Noor Islam's paternal great-grandfather. Every year, the tree bears a large crop of mangoes, each weighing between 200-250 grams. These mangoes are particularly cherished by the people of Thakurgaon, which is why they command a high price in the market. To protect the tree from human interference, a tin fence has been erected around it, and a team of 15 people regularly maintain its care. Visitors who wish to view the majestic tree up close are required to pay an entrance fee of 20 rupees per person.
How to Visit:
To visit the Suryapuri mango tree from Dhaka, you’ll first need to travel to Thakurgaon. The distance from Thakurgaon to Baliadangi Upazila is 25 km, and from Baliadangi to Harinmari, where the tree is located, is another 10 km.
You can take a bus from Dhaka to Thakurgaon on services such as Karnaphuli, Hanif, Nabil, Kaya, or Bablu. Alternatively, you can reach Thakurgaon by train on the Panchagarh route. The bus fare ranges from 800-1800 taka, while the train fare is between 650-2,237 taka.
Once you arrive in Thakurgaon, you can take a local bus to Baliadangi. From there, local transport can take you to Mondu Mala village in Harinmari, where the famous Suryapuri mango tree is located.
