Balashi Ghat, Gaibandha

Balashi Ghat is a River Port and a place of interest located on the banks of river Jamuna in Fulchhari Upazila of Gaibandha District. The distance from Gaibandha town to Balasi Ghat is about 10 kilometers. The most surprising information is that, the only railway ferry in Bangladesh used to run through this Balasi Ghat. A whole train would cross the river in this one of the world's rail ferries! Thirteen lines of railway ferry contain only 3 small bogies or wagons.

Rail ferry service was started at Tistamukh Ghat in Fulchhari upazila of Gaibandha district in 1936 with the aim of increasing the northern railway connection with the capital Dhaka. The British people called Gaibandha district as Fulchhari Ghat at that time. After 1990, due to reduced navigability of the river Jamuna, the ferry service was shifted from Tistamukh Ghat to a place called Balashi in Kanchipara of Fulchhari Upazila. Since then the Ghat has become known as Balashi ghat.

In the rainy season, the river is full of water, but in winter, the sand dunes float here. At present, due to the excellent natural environment of Balasi Ghat, it is becoming popular among the tourists almost every day. The roaring waves of the river, the clear air and the nature make the minds of the visitors cheerful. Visitors can also enjoy a spectacular sunset over the river from horseback riding, boat trips or railway ferries at Balasi Ghat.
